The
College has a fifty-four year history and is nestled in a picturesque
valley surrounded by rolling red gum hills. The Glenelg River meanders
through the township. Casterton is 353km. west of Melbourne and is
approximately 70 km. from Hamilton in Western Victoria and Mt. Gambier and
the Coonawarra districts in the South East of South Australia. Casterton
Secondary College services the needs and provides opportunities for the
people of Strathdownie, Dergholm, Coleraine, Merino and Casterton.
Social
Casterton Secondary College is a single campus, Year 7 - 12 school. The 2009
enrolment is 206 students. Enrolments have briefly increased, but in line
with the local trend are expected to remain steady in the near future. Our
students come predominantly from rural or related backgrounds and 37% of our
families are EMA recipients. There are low levels of students born oversees
and very few students of Koori background.
The staff of the college has changed significantly in recent years. We
currently have 25 teaching staff (including the Principal Class), with
part-timers which equates to 24.6 effective fulltime positions. There are 14
non-teaching staff including integration aides. Of the teaching staff, 5
teachers have less than five years experience, 12 are Expert Class and a
further two are Leading Teachers. The remainder are in the graduate or
accomplished categories.
Educational
At
Year 7 and 8 the College has introduced a themes based VELS integrated
curriculum. The students at Years 9 and 10 study a core curriculum of
English, Maths, SOSE, Science, PE/ Health. Additionally students at these
levels choose from a range of electives including Indonesian, Technology and
Arts based subjects. An enrichment elective is offered for our more able
students in Years 8 and 9. The school's units of work can be sourced from
our internet.
The College makes every effort to provide a broad range of subjects at VCE
level In addition to over 20 VCE subjects. Year 10 students can fast-track
VCE subjects. VET and ATC students travel each Tuesday on our school bus to
Hamilton. Additionally we have an SBA student stream.
The College offers a wide range of extension and enrichment programs
including an instrumental music program, debating, sport, public speaking,
choir and our annual musical performance. It enters students into a range of
competitions including subject competitions, Lions Youth of the Year, and an
annual Rotary debating competition.
Technological
The school has three rooms of computers with a ratio approaching one
computer to two students. There is a computer pod for the Year 7 home rooms.
The Science rooms have clusters of computers. The intranet provides storage
and pick up facilities for all students and staff. Each staff member's desk
has power for lap top use. Wireless connectivity enables all staff to access
the network and the internet from anywhere in the school. Smartboards are
installed in seven classrooms.
Environmental- grounds and facilities
The College grounds are of a very high standard. In 2002-3 the College had a
major upgrade to the top wing. In addition to upgrades to the top wing, the
College has successfully attracted funding to refurbish the sports centre,
upgrade its integration facilities, create a new media centre, a new indoors
dining facility, new tennis courts, upgraded the careers centre, and created
a year 7 staff room next to the refurbished student homerooms. Its woodwork
and sheet materials rooms have new equipment. We have purchased a school bus
and shade cloth for our Year 7 area. We have recently received funding of
$125,000 as part of National Schools Pride for Grounds Refurbishment. A
submission has also been made under the National Trade Training Centre
initiative for a significant refurbishment of the Agriculture, Home
Economics and Technology (Metals) area.
